For the Dough and Assembly
- All-purpose flour, for dusting
- 8 oz. tube crescent roll dough
- 8 all-beef frankfurter hot dogs
- 1 large egg, beaten to blend
- Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling
- Preheat and Prepare Dough: Arrange a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 375°F (190°C). On a lightly floured surface, gently spread the crescent dough into a rectangle using your fingers. Pinch the seams together, then roll out dough to a 10″ x 8″ rectangle with a rolling pin. Slice the dough lengthwise into 8 strips about 1″ wide.
- Weave Hot Dogs: Transfer 7 strips onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Fold back every other strip to expose the parchment. Starting from the left, place a hot dog across the strips. Bring the folded strips back over the hot dog. Fold back alternate strips again to expose parchment, then place the next hot dog alongside the first. Repeat this weaving process until all 8 hot dogs are interwoven within the dough strips.
- Finish Edges: Cut the remaining strip of dough in half crosswise. Use each half to wrap and seal the left and right edges of the woven hot dogs, pinching the dough together to secure. Trim any uneven edges to form a neat rectangle.
- Apply Egg Wash and Season: Brush the entire dough surface with the beaten egg wash to enhance browning and shine. Sprinkle flaky sea salt evenly on top for added flavor and texture.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly.
- Serve: Cut into bite-sized pieces and transfer to a serving platter. Enjoy warm as a delicious appetizer or snack.
Notes
- Make sure to pinch the dough seams firmly to prevent unraveling during baking.
- Use all-beef hot dogs for the best flavor and texture.
- Flaky sea salt adds a nice crunch and enhances flavor but can be omitted or replaced with regular salt.
- This recipe can be served with dipping sauces like mustard, ketchup, or cheese sauce for extra indulgence.
- Allow the pigs in a quilt to cool slightly before cutting to maintain their shape.
