Ingredients

Scale

For the Sauce

  • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/3 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated peeled ginger
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil

For the Stir-fry

  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 2 medium heads of broccoli, cut into bite-sized florets

To Serve

  • Cooked brown or white rice
  • Toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Make the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the finely chopped garlic, low-sodium chicken broth, reduced-sodium soy sauce, honey, cornstarch, grated ginger, and toasted sesame oil until the cornstarch is completely dissolved to form a smooth sauce.
  2. Cook the chicken: Heat the neutral oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook undisturbed for 1 to 2 minutes until they easily release from the pan. Then stir and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is golden brown on all sides and cooked through, about 5 more minutes. Transfer the chicken to a plate and set aside.
  3. Steam the broccoli: Using the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low and add the broccoli florets and the prepared garlic mixture. Cover the skillet and let the broccoli steam until crisp-tender, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Combine chicken and sauce: Uncover the skillet and return the cooked chicken and any juices accumulated on the plate back to the skillet with the broccoli. Stir constantly while cooking for 1 to 2 minutes more until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken and broccoli evenly.
  5. Serve: Divide cooked brown or white rice among plates or bowls. Spoon the chicken and broccoli stir-fry over the rice and garnish with toasted sesame seeds. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Using chicken thighs instead of breasts can provide a juicier, more flavorful dish.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes or a drizzle of chili garlic sauce to the sauce mixture.
  • Broccoli florets should be steamed until crisp-tender to preserve nutrients and texture.
  • Make sure to dissolve the cornstarch fully in the sauce to avoid lumps when thickening.
  • Serve with steamed rice, quinoa, or noodles for a complete meal.
