Ingredients

Scale

Meat Filling

  • 16 oz lean ground beef
  • ½ cup diced yellow onions
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 cup canned diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Pinwheels

  • 16 oz pizza dough
  • 8 oz Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded and divided
  • ½ Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Cook beef mixture: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef, diced onions, and minced garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 7-9 minutes or until the beef is fully cooked and the onions are soft.
  2. Add seasonings: Stir in the drained diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, kosher salt, and black pepper. Continue cooking until all liquid evaporates, stirring frequently. Drain any remaining excess liquid if necessary.
  3. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the pinwheels.
  4. Prepare muffin tin: Spray a 12-cup muffin tin generously with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking; set aside.
  5. Roll pizza dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a 12-inch by 15-inch rectangle for easy filling.
  6. Add filling: Spread the cooked hamburger mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a ½ inch border around the edges. Sprinkle about three-quarters of the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top of the filling.
  7. Form log and slice: Starting from a short side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Using a serrated knife, slice the log into 12 equal-sized pinwheels. Place each pinwheel into the prepared muffin tin cups.
  8. Bake pinwheels: Brush the tops of the pinwheels lightly with olive oil, then sprinkle sesame seeds evenly over them. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until the tops are lightly golden brown.
  9. Add more cheese: Remove the muffin tin from the oven and sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese over each pinwheel. Return the tin to the oven and bake for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts completely.
  10. Cool and serve: Allow the pinwheels to cool in the pan for a few minutes before carefully removing. Serve warm as a tasty appetizer or snack.

Notes

  • Ensure to drain the diced tomatoes well to avoid excess moisture in the filling.
  • Using lean ground beef reduces grease and helps keep pinwheels from becoming soggy.
  • You can substitute cheddar cheese with mozzarella or a cheese blend if preferred.
  • For added flavor, consider adding pickles or a drizzle of ketchup or mustard when serving.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat before serving.
