Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup salted sweet cream butter, softened
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, room temperature

Add-ins

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup red and green M&M’s, plus additional for topping

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and baking soda until well combined. Set aside.
  2. Cream Butter: Using a stand mixer or a handheld mixer on medium-high speed, beat the softened butter for about 1 minute until smooth and creamy.
  3. Add Sugars: Incorporate the light brown sugar and granulated sugar into the butter and continue mixing for 1 to 1½ minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in Vanilla and Egg: Add the vanilla extract and egg to the butter and sugar mixture. Beat until ingredients are fully combined and smooth.
  5. Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix just until everything is incorporated without overmixing.
  6. Fold in Chocolate Chips and M&Ms: Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and the red and green M&Ms to evenly distribute throughout the dough.
  7. Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  8. Scoop Cookie Dough: Using a 3-tablespoon cookie scoop, place balls of cookie dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them just enough so they don’t touch but are close together.
  9. Freeze Dough Balls: Place the baking sheet flat in the freezer and freeze cookie dough balls for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight, ensuring no items are placed on top to flatten the dough.
  10. Preheat Oven and Prepare Sheets: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare two additional baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Remove frozen dough balls and separate them onto the prepared sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  11. Bake Cookies: Bake the frozen cookie dough balls for 16-18 minutes, until the edges turn lightly golden and the centers are just set.
  12. Add Extra M&Ms: Upon removing the cookies from the oven, carefully press 6-8 extra M&Ms onto the top of each warm cookie, gently embedding them without flattening.
  13. Cool Cookies: Allow the cookies to rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes to firm up before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Freezing the cookie dough balls before baking helps maintain their shape and prevents excessive spreading.
  • Room temperature egg and softened butter ensure smooth mixing and better texture.
  • Use parchment paper on baking sheets to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
  • Extra M&Ms on top add festive color and a decorative touch once baked.
  • Cookies are best enjoyed within a few days stored in an airtight container.
