How To Make A Bouquet Garni Recipe

5 from 264 reviews

A bouquet garni is a classic French herb bundle used to infuse soups, stews, and sauces with rich herbal flavors. This easy-to-make aromatic mix typically includes parsley, bay leaf, thyme, rosemary, and optionally black peppercorns, all tied together for easy removal after cooking.

Ingredients

Scale

Herbs

  • 5 parsley stems
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 fresh thyme sprigs
  • 1 fresh rosemary sprig

Optional

  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • Kitchen twine (6-inch piece plus extra for tying)
  • Double-layered square of cheesecloth (optional)

Instructions

  1. Arrange the herbs: Place a 6-inch piece of kitchen twine on a clean work surface. Lay out the parsley stems, bay leaf, thyme sprigs, and rosemary sprig side by side in a straight line along the twine.
  2. Tie the bundle: Wrap the twine around the arranged herbs and tie securely into a tight bundle. Leave extra twine on the ends so the bouquet can be easily removed from your cooking pot later.
  3. Optional – Wrap with cheesecloth: For enhanced flavor and containment, place the herb bundle in a double-layered square of cheesecloth. Sprinkle the black peppercorns over the herbs before gathering the corners of the cheesecloth and tying firmly with twine to create a sealed bundle.

Notes

  • The bouquet garni is ideal for infusing flavor into stocks, soups, stews, sauces, and braises.
  • Use fresh herbs for the best aroma, but dried herbs can be substituted in a cheesecloth pouch if needed.
  • Remove the bouquet garni from the dish before serving to avoid unexpected herb pieces in the food.
  • If you do not have kitchen twine, a fine butcher’s string works well.
  • Customize your bouquet by adding other herbs such as tarragon, marjoram, or sage to suit your recipe.
