Delight in crispy, golden Funnel Cake Fries—a fun twist on classic funnel cakes. These deep-fried strips of sweet batter are perfect for snacking or dessert, topped with powdered sugar and your favorite dipping sauces like caramel or chocolate.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil or shortening (enough for deep frying, about 1½ to 2 inches depth)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and granulated sugar until evenly combined.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Combine Batter: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients while whisking continuously to form a smooth, lump-free batter.
  4. Prepare Dispensing Bag: Transfer the batter to a squeeze bottle, piping bag, or plastic bag with the corner snipped for easy piping into the hot oil.
  5. Heat Oil: Pour vegetable oil or shortening into a deep skillet to a depth of 1½ to 2 inches and heat to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry Funnel Cake Fries: Squeeze the batter into the hot oil in straight lines to form fry shapes. Use your finger or scissors to cut the batter stream. Cook as many fries as fit comfortably in the oil.
  7. Flip Fries: When the bottom side turns golden brown (about 20-30 seconds), carefully flip each fry to cook the other side until golden brown.
  8. Drain Fries: Remove cooked fries with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  9. Repeat Frying: Continue frying the remaining batter in batches, repeating the process.
  10. Serve: Serve the funnel cake fries hot, dusted with powdered sugar or granulated sugar. Optional accompaniments include whipped cream, sliced strawberries or strawberry sauce, caramel sauce, and chocolate sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Ensure oil temperature is maintained around 350°F for even frying and crisp texture.
  • Do not overcrowd the skillet to prevent oil temperature from dropping and uneven cooking.
  • Use a slotted spoon or spider to safely remove fries from hot oil.
  • Customize toppings and dipping sauces to your preference for variety.
  • These fries are best enjoyed fresh for optimal crispiness.
