Filling
- 8 ounces crab meat (or imitation crab, drained and picked)
- 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 3/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 cup sliced green onions
Wrappers
- 20 wonton wrappers
- 1 egg (beaten, for sealing)
For Frying
- Neutral oil (as needed for frying, such as vegetable or canola oil)
To Serve
- Dipping sauce (such as sweet chili sauce)
- Combine filling: In a medium bowl, mix together the crab meat, softened cream cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and sliced green onions. Stir the ingredients until fully combined and smooth.
- Prepare wrappers: Cover the wonton wrappers with a damp cloth to keep them moist while working to prevent drying out.
- Fill wrappers: Place one wonton wrapper on a clean, dry surface. Spoon about 2 teaspoons of the crab filling into the center of the wrapper. Lightly brush the edges of the wrapper with the beaten egg to help seal.
- Fold wontons: Bring two opposite corners of the wrapper together over the filling and pinch to seal. Then bring the other two corners together and pinch firmly to create a secure package. Repeat this process for all wrappers and filling.
- Heat oil: Pour neutral oil into a deep pan or skillet to a depth sufficient for deep frying, and heat it to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry wontons: Carefully fry the shaped wontons in small batches, turning occasionally, for 3 to 5 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
- Drain and serve: Remove the fried wontons with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately while hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as sweet chili sauce.
Notes
- For a lower-fat version, you can bake the wontons at 400°F for 12-15 minutes or until crispy, but frying gives the best texture.
- Be sure to keep the wonton wrappers covered with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out and cracking while filling and folding.
- Use fresh crab meat for the best flavor, but imitation crab is a budget-friendly alternative.
- Adjust the seasoning by adding a pinch of salt or pepper if desired.
- Serve with additional dipping sauces like soy sauce, sweet and sour sauce, or plum sauce for variety.
