Ingredients

  • 1 12-pack Kings Hawaiian Rolls (Sweet) (or other rolls)
  • 1-2 tablespoons oil (olive oil, neutral oil, or butter)
  • 1 large onion, sliced thin
  • 1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound shaved steak
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt (to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (to taste)
  • 6-8 slices provolone cheese (regular or smoked)
  • 3-4 tablespoons butter, melted (salted or unsalted)
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar (light or dark, optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly spray a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Set aside.
  2. Step 2: Heat 1-2 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and green bell pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the peppers are soft and the onions begin to caramelize. Set the vegetables aside to the side of the pan or on a plate if your pan is too small.
  3. Step 3: Increase the heat to medium-high and add the shaved steak to the skillet. Use tongs to separate and toss the meat quickly to prevent clumping. Cook until mostly browned with a slight pink remaining.
  4. Step 4: Pour the prepared Worcestershire mixture over the steak and stir to coat evenly.
  5. Step 5: Return the cooked onions and peppers to the skillet and stir to combine. Remove from heat.
  6. Step 6: Carefully slice the Kings Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, keeping the rolls connected. Place the bottom half in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Step 7: Spread the steak and vegetable mixture evenly over the bottom half of the rolls. For sturdier sliders, slice the bottom half slightly thicker to avoid sogginess.
  8. Step 8: Layer the provolone cheese slices over the meat mixture, then cover with the top half of the rolls.
  9. Step 9: In a small bowl, combine melted butter, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 2 teaspoons brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder, and 1 teaspoon dried thyme. Stir well.
  10. Step 10: Pour this butter mixture over the top of the rolls, using a brush to coat the tops and sides, getting in between each slider.
  11. Step 11: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 15-20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted and the tops are golden brown. Serve immediately.

Tips & Variations

  • Substitute the shaved steak with thinly sliced ribeye, sirloin, or even cooked ground beef for different textures.
  • Try different cheeses like mozzarella, Swiss, or cheddar for a unique flavor.
  • Add sliced mushrooms to the caramelized vegetables for extra savoriness.
  • Brush the sliders with garlic butter before baking for a richer taste.

Storage

Store leftover sliders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 325°F (160°C) for about 10 minutes or until warmed through to maintain the bread’s texture and melt the cheese again.

How to Serve

The image shows a white plate with a small sandwich piece made of a golden brown top bread layer that looks soft and shiny, underneath which there is a thick layer of cooked, shredded meat mixed with some melted cheese and bits of sautéed onions. On one side of the sandwich on the plate, there are several fresh green leafy salad leaves, and on the other side, there are three thin slices of cucumber with dark green edges. In the background, there is a white rectangular baking dish with the rest of the sandwich loaf showing the same golden brown bread top and filling, placed on a surface with a white marbled texture. Sliders

  • 1 12-pack King’s Hawaiian Sweet Rolls (or other soft rolls)
  • 12 tablespoons oil (olive oil, neutral oil, or butter)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound shaved steak
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt (to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper (to taste)
  • 68 slices provolone cheese (regular or smoked)

Topping Sauce

  • 34 tablespoons melted butter (salted or unsalted)
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar (light or dark, optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Seasoning: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly spray a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and ½ teaspoon black pepper. Set this mixture aside for seasoning the steak.
  2. Caramelize Onions and Peppers: Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and green bell pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the peppers are soft and the onions have caramelized slightly. Push the vegetables to the side of the pan or transfer them to a plate if space is limited.
  3. Cook Shaved Steak: Increase the skillet heat to medium-high. Add the shaved steak and quickly toss using tongs to prevent clumping. Cook until the steak is mostly browned but still slightly pink in places.
  4. Season Steak: Pour the prepared Worcestershire, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper mixture over the steak and stir well to coat all the meat evenly.
  5. Add Vegetables Back In: Stir the caramelized onions and peppers back into the steak mixture. Remove the skillet from heat once combined.
  6. Slice Rolls and Assemble: Carefully slice the King’s Hawaiian rolls horizontally in half, keeping the rolls intact. Place the bottom halves in the prepared baking dish. Spread the steak and vegetable mixture evenly over the bottom halves, slicing the bottom halves slightly thicker to prevent sogginess.
  7. Add Cheese and Replace Tops: Layer 6 to 8 slices of provolone cheese over the steak mixture. Place the top halves of the rolls back onto the sliders.
  8. Prepare Topping Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together 3 tablespoons melted butter, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 2 teaspoons brown sugar, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon onion powder, and 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves.
  9. Brush Sauce Over Sliders: Pour the sauce mixture slowly over the top of the assembled sliders. Use a brush to coat the sides and get between the rolls for even flavor coverage.
  10. Bake the Sliders: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and the tops are golden brown. Serve the sliders immediately while warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute shaved steak with thinly sliced roast beef or sirloin for a similar result.
  • Provolone cheese can be replaced with mozzarella or cheddar, depending on your preference.
  • For a less sweet slider, omit the brown sugar in the topping sauce.
  • Using King’s Hawaiian rolls gives these sliders a slightly sweet and soft texture; other dinner rolls will also work.
  • Be careful not to overcook the steak; it should remain tender with a slight pink hue.
  • If you don’t have a cast iron skillet, use any heavy-bottomed skillet for caramelizing and cooking.
