Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter (1/2 cup), room temperature
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  • Black food coloring, optional

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Add-ins and Toppings

  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Candy eyeballs

Instructions

  1. Prepare baking sheet and oven: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream butter and sugars: In a large bowl or stand mixer, cream together the butter, sugar, and brown sugar on medium-high speed for about 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Add a few drops of black food coloring if desired and mix again to incorporate.
  3. Add egg and vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, mixing for another 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure everything is evenly combined.
  4. Mix dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  5. Combine dry ingredients with wet: Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter mixture on low speed, mixing until fully incorporated.
  6. Add milk and chocolate chips: Pour in the milk and mix briefly, then fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  7. Shape cookies and add eyeballs: Using about 2 tablespoons of dough per cookie, roll into balls and place on the prepared baking sheet spaced apart. Press candy eyeballs gently on top of each dough ball for decoration.
  8. Bake the cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 11 minutes. Remove from oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  9. Cool completely: Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool fully before serving.

Notes

  • Using black food coloring is optional but gives a fun spooky effect to the dough.
  • Make sure butter is softened to room temperature for smooth creaming.
  • Do not overbake; cookies should remain soft and slightly chewy.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • For a fun twist, try using different candy eyes or other Halloween-themed toppings.
