A delicious and hearty Cuban sandwich featuring mojo pork, deli ham, salami, swiss cheese, dill pickles, and a flavorful herb butter spread, toasted to crispy perfection on traditional Cuban bread.

Ingredients

Scale

Herb Butter

  • 2 tbsp salted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp packed fresh cilantro (finely chopped)
  • 1 tbsp packed fresh parsley (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

Sandwich

  • 1 large loaf Cuban bread
  • 3 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1/4 lb Swiss cheese
  • 1 lb pulled mojo pork (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 lb deli ham (thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 lb salami (thinly sliced)
  • 1/2 cup dill pickles (sliced lengthwise)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the sandwich.
  2. Make Herb Butter: In a small bowl, combine the room-temperature salted butter, garlic paste, finely chopped fresh cilantro, fresh parsley, and dried oregano. Stir well until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Set aside.
  3. Prepare Bread: Slice the large Cuban bread loaf in half lengthwise. Spread the herb butter mixture evenly on the inside of one half of the bread. Spread the yellow mustard evenly on the inside of the other half.
  4. Add Pickles and Cheese: On the mustard-spread side, layer the dill pickle slices lengthwise and then place the Swiss cheese evenly on top of them.
  5. Add Meats: On the herb butter-spread side, pile the pulled mojo pork, followed by the thinly sliced deli ham and salami, distributing the meats evenly.
  6. Bake Open-Faced: Place the sandwich open-faced on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 5 minutes, or until the cheese starts to melt and the salami edges begin to crisp.
  7. Close and Press Sandwich: Remove from oven and carefully close the sandwich. Cover the top with parchment paper or tin foil, then place another baking sheet or a heavy oven-safe pan (such as cast iron) on top to weigh it down, pressing the sandwich.
  8. Final Bake: Bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the sandwich is heated through, the bread is crispy, and the layers meld together perfectly.

Notes

  • For authentic Cuban bread, check local Latin markets or bakery sections.
  • If mojo pork is unavailable, slow-cooked pork shoulder with garlic, citrus, and oregano can be substituted.
  • Use parchment paper or foil to prevent the sandwich from sticking when pressing it in the oven.
  • You can swap out salami for other cured meats if preferred.
  • Serve warm with plantain chips or a side salad for a complete meal.
