This recipe guides you to make perfectly soft and flavorful baked sweet potatoes, enhanced with melted butter, salt, and pepper. By wrapping them in foil and baking at 400°F, the sweet potatoes cook evenly and retain moisture, making a delicious and comforting side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Sweet Potatoes

  • 4 large sweet potatoes

Seasoning & Toppings

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the sweet potatoes evenly.
  2. Prepare Sweet Potatoes: Scrub each sweet potato thoroughly to remove dirt. Use a fork to poke 8 to 10 ventilation holes in each sweet potato’s skin. Then wrap each tightly in aluminum foil to lock in moisture.
  3. Bake: Place the foil-wrapped sweet potatoes on a baking sheet to catch any leaking juice. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour or until the potatoes are soft inside when pierced.
  4. Unwrap and Slice: Carefully remove the hot sweet potatoes from the oven and unwrap the foil. Slice each sweet potato lengthwise in half to expose the soft flesh.
  5. Add Butter and Season: Spoon 1 tablespoon of melted butter into the inside of each sweet potato half, then season evenly with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Scrubbing and poking holes allows the sweet potatoes to cook through evenly and prevents bursting.
  • Wrapping in foil traps heat and moisture promoting tender flesh.
  • You can customize toppings with cinnamon, brown sugar, or sour cream for variations.
  • Ensure to handle hot sweet potatoes carefully after baking to avoid burns.
  • Cooking time may vary slightly depending on sweet potato size.
