This refreshing recipe features fresh strawberries macerated in Ouzo and lightly sweetened with brown sugar. The combination of the anise-flavored Greek spirit and sweet strawberries creates a vibrant and aromatic treat perfect as a dessert topping or a standalone snack. The simple preparation requires minimal effort and enhances the natural sweetness of the fruit with a touch of spirited depth.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit

  • 500 g Strawberries, fresh (17.5 oz)

Other Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp Light brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Ouzo

Instructions

  1. Rinse: Rinse the strawberries thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. After rinsing, pick off the tops and stems from each strawberry.
  2. Cut: Cut the strawberries in half to allow the sugar and Ouzo to better penetrate and macerate the fruit. Place the halved strawberries into an airtight container.
  3. Add and shake: Add the brown sugar and Ouzo to the container with the strawberries. Secure the lid tightly and gently shake the container until the strawberries are evenly coated with the sugar and spirit.
  4. Place: Put the airtight container in the refrigerator and allow the strawberries to macerate for at least 1 hour. For best flavor, leave them overnight to fully absorb the sweetness and Ouzo aroma.

Notes

  • The macerated strawberries can be served over ice cream, yogurt, pancakes, or enjoyed on their own as a refreshing dessert.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar and Ouzo to taste depending on your preference for sweetness and alcohol intensity.
  • If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, substitute Ouzo with anise extract diluted with a little water or orange juice.
  • Make sure to use fresh, ripe strawberries for the best flavor and texture.
  • This recipe keeps well refrigerated for up to 2 days but is best enjoyed fresh.
