Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Coconut Oil
  • 1 pound Ground Chicken
  • ¼ cup Chopped Carrots
  • ¼ cup Frozen Green Peas
  • 3 cups Chicken Stock (without onions, garlic, or salt)

Thickening Agent

  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch or Arrowroot Powder
  • ½ cup Cold Water

Instructions

  1. Heat the Coconut Oil: Melt coconut oil in a skillet over medium-high heat to prepare for cooking the chicken.
  2. Cook the Ground Chicken: Add ground chicken to the skillet and cook, stirring often to break up the meat, until it is fully browned and crumbly, ensuring even cooking throughout.
  3. Add Vegetables and Stock: Pour in the chicken stock, followed by chopped carrots and frozen green peas. Cover the skillet, reduce heat to low, and allow it to simmer gently for 10 minutes to soften the vegetables and meld flavors.
  4. Optional Chunky Gravy Preparation: For a chunkier texture, remove about one cup of the meat and vegetable mixture and set it aside before thickening the gravy.
  5. Make the Thickening Slurry: In a separate bowl, combine the cornstarch or arrowroot powder with cold water, mixing until smooth to avoid lumps.
  6. Add the Slurry to Gravy: Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering gravy while stirring continuously to evenly thicken the mixture without clumping.
  7. Cool the Gravy: Remove the skillet from heat and let the gravy cool down to room temperature to prepare for blending.
  8. Blend for Smoothness: Transfer the cooled mixture to a food processor or blender and blend until it reaches a smooth, consistent texture suitable for your dog’s preference.
  9. Reincorporate Saved Chunks: Stir the reserved meat and vegetable chunks back into the blended gravy to add texture and heartiness.
  10. Serve: Pour the homemade dog gravy over your dog’s regular food to enrich flavor and moisture.

Notes

  • Make sure the chicken stock used does not contain onions, garlic, or salt as these ingredients can be harmful to dogs.
  • Cornstarch or arrowroot powder can be used as a thickening agent based on your preference; arrowroot is a good grain-free alternative.
  • Adjust the thickness of the gravy by varying the amount of thickener used.
  • Store any leftover gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Always introduce new foods to your dog gradually and consult with your veterinarian if your pet has any dietary restrictions or health concerns.
