Cheese
- 8 ounces mozzarella Ciligiene
Produce
- 1 pint cherry tomatoes
- ¼ cup fresh basil leaves
Condiments
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- Preheat and drain cheese: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and drain the mozzarella to remove any excess liquid for best results.
- Prepare molds: Lightly brush or spray the silicone skull molds with oil to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal of the cheese shapes.
- Fill molds: Place one mozzarella ciligiene ball into each skull cavity of the prepared molds, then place the molds onto a small baking sheet for stability.
- Bake cheese: Bake in the preheated oven for 6 to 8 minutes until the cheese is warmed and softened, making it easier to mold.
- Press and drain: Remove molds from the oven and press each ball firmly into the mold using a piece of folded paper towel to both shape the cheese and absorb excess liquid.
- Chill and set: Place the molds in the refrigerator for 10 to 15 minutes to cool and set the skull shapes, then gently press the cheese out from the outside of the mold to remove the skull cheeses.
- Repeat molding: Repeat the molding and chilling process with the remaining mozzarella balls to make more skull shapes.
- Assemble skewers: Thread each mozzarella skull onto a bamboo skewer, add a folded basil leaf next, then top with a cherry tomato to complete the skewer.
- Dress and serve: Whisk together olive oil and balsamic vinegar, then either drizzle the dressing over the skewers or serve it on the side for dipping.
Notes
- Use fresh mozzarella ciligiene balls for best texture and flavor.
- Make sure to lightly oil the silicone molds to prevent tearing the cheese shapes.
- These skewers can be prepared ahead and refrigerated until serving.
- Use bamboo picks about 4-6 inches long to comfortably hold all ingredients.
- If you don’t have silicone skull molds, consider using other fun-shaped molds or simply serve the ingredients threaded traditionally.
- For extra flavor, add a sprinkle of cracked black pepper or chili flakes before serving.
