For the Sandwiches
- 6 fish sticks
- 4 slices white sandwich bread
- 2 tablespoons softened butter
- ½ cup chopped lettuce
- 6 slices dill pickles (more to taste)
For the Tartar Sauce
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup minced dill pickles
- 1 teaspoon fresh minced dill
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- Prepare the air fryer basket: Spritz an air fryer basket with oil spray to prevent sticking. Arrange the fish sticks in a single layer with space between each piece to ensure proper air circulation. Lightly spritz the tops of the fish sticks with oil spray for enhanced crispiness.
- Air fry the fish sticks: Cook the fish sticks at 400°F (204°C) for 12 minutes or until they are hot and crispy, turning once halfway through if needed. The result should be golden-brown and crunchy on the outside.
- Make the tartar sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, minced dill pickles, fresh minced dill, lemon juice, and onion powder. Stir well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated. Set aside or refrigerate until ready to use.
- Butter the bread slices: Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of the white sandwich bread. This will add flavor and help prevent sogginess from the tartar sauce and fish sticks.
- Assemble the sandwiches: On two buttered bread slices (butter side down), layer chopped lettuce evenly, then place 3 hot fish sticks on each. Add dill pickle slices over the fish sticks and drizzle tartar sauce generously on top. Close each sandwich with the remaining buttered bread slices, butter side up.
- Serve immediately: Enjoy the sandwiches fresh for the best taste and crisp texture. Serve as is or with your favorite side if desired.
- Storage note for tartar sauce: Leftover tartar sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, making it convenient for future use.
Notes
- Use frozen fish sticks for convenience; ensure they are fully cooked and crispy before assembling the sandwich.
- You can substitute white sandwich bread with whole wheat or gluten-free bread if preferred.
- Adjust the amount of tartar sauce and pickles to taste for more or less tanginess.
- The air fryer method gives the crispiest fish fingers without frying in oil.
- For extra flavor, sprinkle a little black pepper or paprika on the fish sticks before air frying.
