Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup mashed bananas (approximately 1 and ½ bananas)
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • ¾1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup oatmeal flour (made by processing oatmeal into flour or alternatively use 3 cups whole wheat flour)
  • ¼ cup oatmeal

Add-ins and Toppings

  • ¾ cup crushed dehydrated bananas (reserve ¼ cup for topping)
  • ½ cup bacon bits (reserve some for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the dog treats.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, peanut butter, egg, olive oil, and mashed bananas until the mixture is smooth and combined.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add whole wheat flour, oatmeal flour, baking powder, and oatmeal into the wet mixture. Mix on low until a cookie-like dough forms. Adjust consistency by adding more milk if too dry or more flour if too sticky.
  4. Incorporate Add-ins: Fold in the crushed dehydrated bananas and bacon bits, reserving some of each for the topping.
  5. Roll and Cut Dough: Lightly flour your work surface, roll the dough out to about ¼ inch thickness, and cut into shapes your dog will enjoy.
  6. Apply Toppings: Brush the cut treats with an egg wash and sprinkle the reserved crushed bananas and bacon bits on top, lightly pressing them into the dough to adhere.
  7. Bake: Place the treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until golden brown and crunchy.
  8. Cool and Store: Remove from oven, cool thoroughly on a wire rack, then store in an airtight container. For longer freshness, freeze in ziplock bags for up to 3 months and thaw as needed.

Notes

  • If the dough seems too dry, add more milk a tablespoon at a time until the dough is easy to roll.
  • If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle in additional flour gradually.
  • Dehydrated bananas can be prepared by thinly slicing bananas and drying them in the oven or food dehydrator.
  • Use natural unsweetened peanut butter to avoid added sugars or artificial sweeteners harmful to dogs.
  • Ensure bacon bits are cooked thoroughly and unsalted to be safe for canine consumption.
  • These treats are crunchy when baked properly; monitor baking time as ovens may vary.
  • Freezing treats extends shelf life and preserves freshness.
