These Copycat Texas Roadhouse Rolls are soft, buttery, and slightly sweet dinner rolls that perfectly replicate the iconic bread served at Texas Roadhouse restaurants. With a tender crumb and golden-brown crust, they’re ideal for accompanying any meal or serving with homemade butter.

Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter (divided)
  • 1 large egg (at room temperature)

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ teaspoon active dry yeast (or 1 packet)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups (480 grams) all-purpose or bread flour

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Milk: Bring the milk to a near boil by heating it until it just begins to steam and small bubbles form along the sides of the pan. Remove it from heat and let it cool down to lukewarm, between 80-90°F (27-32°C).
  2. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm milk, yeast, and honey. Stir gently until combined and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  3. Mix Dough Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix 3 tablespoons of melted butter, the milk and yeast mixture, the room temperature egg, salt, and half of the flour. Mix slowly, using a mixer with a dough hook or by hand, until smooth. Gradually add the remaining flour and continue mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the Dough: Knead the dough for 8 minutes using the mixer or by hand on a floured surface for a few additional minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. First Rise: Lightly spray a large bowl with cooking spray and place the dough inside. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about ½ inch thickness. Fold the dough in half gently to seal the edges. Cut into 24 even squares.
  7. Second Rise: Place the squares onto two lightly greased and lightly colored baking sheets, spaced evenly. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let rise for 30-40 minutes until doubled in size.
  8. Preheat and Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes until the tops are a light golden brown.
  9. Finish with Butter: Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and brush it generously over the warm rolls to give a rich, glossy finish.
  10. Serve: Serve the rolls warm with Copycat Texas Roadhouse Butter for the best experience.
  11. Optional Bread Machine Method: Add the milk, honey, melted butter, egg, and salt to the bread machine pan. Add the flour on top, creating a small well in the flour without letting liquids enter it. Place the yeast in the well. Run the dough cycle on the machine. Once complete, transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover and let rise for 1 hour. Then shape, rise, and bake as instructed above.

Notes

  • Ensure the milk is not too hot to avoid killing the yeast; lukewarm temperature is critical for yeast activation.
  • Use bread flour for a chewier texture or all-purpose flour for softer rolls.
  • If you don’t have a mixer with a dough hook, knead the dough by hand on a floured surface.
  • For the best texture, do not skip the second rise before baking.
  • The rolls are best served warm but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
  • Brush rolls with melted butter immediately after baking for the authentic rich finish.
