5 from 29 reviews

This Apple Brown Sugar Syrup recipe combines rich dark brown sugar with crisp apple juice and warming cinnamon to create a versatile, flavorful syrup perfect for drizzling over desserts like apple crisp, pancakes, or ice cream. The syrup is easy to prepare with just a few ingredients and a quick simmer, producing a sweet, spiced apple sauce that enhances any dish with a cozy autumnal flair.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Brown Sugar Syrup

  • 2 cups (400 grams) dark brown sugar (for a richer, deeper flavor; light brown sugar can be used for a milder syrup)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) apple juice (good quality pure apple juice with no added ingredients)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (or apple pie spice as a substitute)
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Add the dark brown sugar, apple juice, ground cinnamon, and sea salt to a small pan. Stir until all the ingredients are well combined and the sugar is evenly distributed.
  2. Simmer the Syrup: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer with small bubbles. Stir or swirl the pan occasionally to prevent sticking, and let it cook for 10 minutes to thicken slightly and develop flavor.
  3. Cool and Store: Remove the pan from heat and let the syrup cool slightly. Then, carefully pour it into a small jar or any heatproof container with a lid for storage.
  4. Make Apple Crisp Drizzle: Leave about ½ cup (120 ml) of syrup in the pan after transferring the rest. Return the pan to low heat and let this reserved syrup simmer gently for another 5 minutes. Be careful not to simmer longer to avoid the syrup hardening like toffee.
  5. Final Transfer and Cleanup: Transfer the finished drizzle to a heatproof container. For easy cleanup of any sticky residue, use very hot water on the pan after cooking.

Notes

  • Use dark brown sugar for a deeper molasses flavor or light brown sugar for a milder syrup.
  • Apple pie spice can substitute for cinnamon if preferred.
  • Store the syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat gently before use.
  • The syrup can be used over pancakes, waffles, ice cream, oatmeal, or as a drizzle on apple desserts.
  • Simmering the reserved syrup longer than 5 minutes will harden it into a toffee-like consistency, so keep time precise.
